A Job Developers Association for your SDA?
A professional association for job developers? This unique idea is a reality in New Jersey where the Central Jersey Job Developers Association has been a successful forum for networking, sharing of job listings and cooperative ventures since 1981.
The association's 230 members are job developers, career and vocational counselors working with non-profit public and private agencies that serve people with various needs. More than one-half of its members are involved with Workforce Investment Act programs.
The association was originally designed to share information about jobs and job listings and to eliminate duplicate calls by several agencies to the same employer. This aspect of the association's charge never really worked, but members found that the networking and training possibilities offered by the association were even more valuable. Members do share job listings, however, for openings that their agency cannot fill, there is no attempt to restrict other members from calling on employers.
Meetings are held every other month and include programs voted for by members. The association also provides professional development and training programs for members that a single agency alone could not afford. In addition, members run a highly successful job fair each year.
Information about job openings, conferences, job fairs, and other local labor market happenings is transmitted electronically via a CJJDA "listserv", as well as a monthly bulletin. Funding for its newsletter and other activities are provided primarily through donations from member agencies, although money is also collected by employers to conduct the annual Job Fair.
